๐ŸŒผ Haiku for Kids

June 12, 2025

Whatโ€™s a haiku?
A haiku is a tiny poem that comes from Japan.
It has just three lines and talks about things you can see, hear, or feel โ€” like flowers, frogs, rainbows, or snow! โ„๏ธ๐Ÿธ๐ŸŒธ

โœจ Haiku Rules (The Super Simple Way!)

๐Ÿ“ A haiku has three lines:

  • Line 1: 5 syllables
  • Line 2: 7 syllables
  • Line 3: 5 syllables

๐Ÿ‘‰ Whatโ€™s a syllable?

Itโ€™s the beats in a word โ€” like how you clap! ๐Ÿ‘

๐ŸŽ Ap-ple = 2 syllables
๐Ÿธ Fro-g = 1 syllable
๐ŸŽˆ Ba-loon = 2 syllables

Try clapping each word to count!

๐Ÿ Haiku Examples

Here are some haiku written just for kids:

๐Ÿ–๏ธ Letโ€™s Write Your Own Haiku!

  1. Look Around โ€“ What do you see outside? A bird? A cloud? A bug?
  2. Say it out loud โ€“ Think of what it looks or sounds like.
  3. Clap it out โ€“ Count the syllables! Try 5โ€“7โ€“5.
  4. Write it down โ€“ It doesnโ€™t need to rhyme. Just be YOU!

๐Ÿงธ Haiku Writing Fun!

Here are some fun ideas to help you start:

  • ๐ŸŽจ Draw a picture first, then write a haiku about it.
  • ๐Ÿ” Go on a nature walk and look for something tiny to write about.
  • ๐ŸŽถ Listen to sounds like wind, birds, or rain โ€” write about what you hear!
  • ๐Ÿ“ธ Look at a photo and make up a haiku story about it.

๐Ÿ’ก Haiku Magic Tip

Haikus are like a tiny movie in your head โ€” just one moment! Try to show, not tell.

Instead of:

I feel happy today.

Try:

Sun is in my eyes
My swing flies up to the sky
I giggle so loud

๐Ÿ Letโ€™s Try One Together!

Letโ€™s write a haiku about ice cream:

Cold ice on my tongue (5)
Melts so fast in the sunshine (7)
Drips down to my chin (5)

Yum! ๐Ÿฆ

๐Ÿฅณ You're a Haiku Hero!

Now itโ€™s your turn! Go write a haiku and share it with your teacher, your family, or a friend.
Remember: just 3 lines, count the claps, and have fun! ๐ŸŽ‰
